The Korean Society of Ophthalmic Plastic
and Reconstructive Surgery (KSOPRS)

has been developing day by day to establish
an academic research system and improve its quality.

As the importance of oculoplastic ophthalmology gradually increased, in order to establish an academic research system and improve the quality of research, 91 members of the Ophthalmology Society who were interested in this field gathered in 1987 and elected the late Prof. Choi Eok of Yonsei University as the representative of promotors. They deliberated on the Articles of Incorporation for the establishment of the Oculoplastic Surgery Research Society on October 17, 1987. Eight members, including Drs. Kong Young-tae, Kim Byung-hong, Kim Hee-soo, Park Eun-ho, Shin Hwan-ho, Ahn Jung-sook, Lee Jang-woo, and Hong Gun-soo, held a meeting of promoters to deliberate and decided the name of the Association as the Korean Society of Oculoplastic Surgery.

Dr. Choi Eok was elected as the first President, Dr. Lee Tae-soo as the general affairs director, and Drs. Park Eun-ho, Lee Jang-woo, Kim Hee-soo, Kong Young-tae, Shin Hwan-ho, Ahn Jung-sook, Kim Byung-hong, and Hong Gun-soo as directors.

On February 11, 1988, the Korean Society of Oculoplastic Surgery was officially inaugurated by holding the founding general meeting and symposium. In February 1996, the Articles of Incorporation were revised. The board of directors was reorganized, and the society has been holding active meetings to date.

It was the dedication and efforts of many ophthalmologists who laid the foundation at a time when the word Oculoplastic Surgery was unfamiliar.

Under the bulldozer-like drive of Prof. Lee Tae-soo, the gentleness of Dr. Jung Hwa-sun, the coolness of Dr. Lee Sang-yeul, and the academic passion of Dr. Kim Yoon-duck, the Korean Society of Oculoplastic Surgery has been developing day by day.

Dr. Lee Tae-soo served as the second President, and Dr. Jung Hwa-sun served as the third President. Dr. Lee Sang-yeul became the fourth President at the spring general meeting in 2002 and served as the fifth President, and Dr. Kim Yoon-duck became the sixth President at the spring general meeting in 2006 and served as the seventh President.

In particular, in 2002, Dr. Lee Sang-yeul, together with the previous President, prepared the Oculoplastic Surgery Textbook with several members. In 2004, as the prestigious Oculoplastic Surgery Textbook was created, a commemorative event for the publication of the book was successfully held, which has now been revised to the fourth edition, making it easier for many ophthalmologists and specialists to study oculoplastic ophthalmology.

At the 2nd International Blepharoplasty Symposium in 2001, the Korean Society of Oculoplastic Surgery held the Fall Case Discussion. The Spring Case Discussion of the Korean Society of Oculoplastic Surgery is held in the provinces, while the Fall Case Discussion is held in Seoul, and the scale and content are growing every year.

In 2005, the Society held the 1st Korean Society of Oculoplastic Surgery Blepharoplasty Workshop on the topic of “Upper Eyelid Plastic Surgery.” This workshop has evolved into a full-fledged Blepharoplasty Workshop that discusses plastic surgery of the eyelids, covering the upper and lower eyelids every other year, and is attended not only by ophthalmologists and residents but also by other specialists and cosmetic surgeons. In 2008, the 20th Anniversary Symposium was organized by Prof. Yoon-Deok Kim, who was then the President of the Asia-Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (APSOPRS), in conjunction with several members and was successfully held in conjunction with the APSOPRS Symposium.

Since then, Professors Kim Sung-joo, Khwarg Sang-in, Kim Sang-duk, Woo Kyung-in, Yang Suk-woo, Jang Jae-woo, Seo Seong-wook, Baek Sehyun, Ahn Hee-bae, Ahn Min and La Tae-yoon have served as Presidents.

In 2013, the name was changed to the Korean Society of Opthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which is easier for patients to understand, and in 2018, the Society celebrated its 30th anniversary and has been developing into a representative Research Society under the Korean Ophthalmological Society, which has a 70-year history. In 2022, the 4th International Orbital Society Symposium was held successfully.

In 2024, Prof. Helen Lew was elected as the 19th President and is currently serving.
